hi, guys.
our fist mission is to correct wrong information about Korea and it's due to September 22nd.

'East Sea' is the body of water between Korean peninsula and Japanese archipelago. Historically speaking, the 'East Sea' has been used for a long time in Korea and other countries' maps.

But, in most world maps and atlases used internationally today. "East Sea" is indicated as the "Sea of Japan". According to IHO and UNCSGN, in case of topographical feature shared with two or ore countries, yet naming differently in their own languages, all of the names in each languages should be marked. It is an absolute mistake to hear just one side of the story and to blindly follow. If we leave these kinds of things alone, it causes serious problems that disturb the order of international society.

Using a proper name for the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical feature. It is part of the national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it. Today, many encyclopedias, organizations, textbook publishers and media are adopting 'East Sea' as name of this sea through Korean' activities.

so, "in my humble opinion," I think Japan is trying to make the sea between Korea and Japan as "sea of Japan" on purpose so that it can be seem more reasonable when it claims "Dokdo" is its territory. (Apparently, Dokdo has been Korean territory for a long time and Japan has been trying to take it over. and i guess it's because Japan is sinking down under the sea.) So, even if it(changing name) might be really small thing to you, it is actually being a big world conflict. If this conflict goes on longer, there might be a war between Korea and Japan which might be expanded to world war. and even if there won't be any war, the conflict between Korea and Japan will bring economic hit on the world since Korea and Japan are two of the most economically influential countries in Asia.

So so so guys, let's make it straight!!
Withe the sticker, let's change Sea of Japan to East Sea!!!!
Start from your history book. (to give you a tip, you can find it in cold war section in u.s. history book :D )
and then, let your friends know it and correct it!

Peace in Han Peninsular- Unification of North and South Korea

Hi, everyone. 

As North Korea has been developing nuclear power, peace in Han Peninsular has also been an international concern.

And both Koreas have tried to unite two Koreas in one country for a long time.

But they are still separated. 

Then, IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE TO UNITE SOUTH AND NORTH KOREA? WHAT IS THE REASON BEHIND THE PARTITIONS OF KOREA?

     As Japan surrendered to two different countries, Soviet Union and the United States, at the end of the Second World War, Korea was also separated to two countries. (Korea was colonized by Japan.) But, the Soviet Union and the U.S. had different ideology- communism and democracy- resulting two Koreas to have different ideology and governments.  Under the different ideology and governments, Korea has been separated for 60 years. And 60 years was long enough to change every single aspects of two Koreas. With different culture and language which are being more and more different, it's also harder to unite each other as time passed.

     In addition to different culture and language they developed, their governments have different idea of unification. 

South Korea's unification policy is "｢민족공동체통일방안&#65379" which was made with citizens' agreement in 1989. It tries to make "national community" with reconciliation and cooperation of two Koreas. Basically, it proposes "one national and one government". (According to this policy, there should be only one government in Korea if South and North Korea unite.) Also, the government established by this policy guarantees individual's freedom, civil rights, and human dignity. For this, government of South Korea has suggested North Korea to give up developing nuclear power and to have open-door-policy. Also, as peaceful unification and peaceful settlement of North Korea's nuclear power development require international cooperation and support, the government has tried to get support from international society.

On the other hand, North Korea's official unification policy is ｢고려민주연방공화국 창립방안&#65379. It proposes "one national, one country, two systems, and two governments" -like a federal. So, it's basically different from that of South Korea and both Koreas didn't get to an agreement yet.

I can't say that it's possible to unite Korea or not. But if you are more interested in unification of Korea and the policies, you can go to South Korean Government's unification affair department homepage (www.unikorea.go.kr).   As it's on English, too, feel free to go to it and learn more :)

So, to build a bridge, we have to know each other's culture.
So why don't you learn about Korea?
These days, there are so much misstated information between Korea, China, and Japan.

디지털 외교관 미션 1-2 (종이비행기)

     빨주노초파남보

무지개 빛 꿈들이 하늘로 던져졌다. 나에게 도착한 꿈은 파란색 비행기. 이 꿈의 주인공은 어떤 꿈을 가졌을 까 호기심 반 설렘 반으로 비행기를 펼쳤다. 하지만 이 비행기에는 꿈이 적혀있지 않았다. 박기태 단장님이 던지신 비행기이었던 것이다. 처음엔 실망이 컸다. 하지만 박기태 단장님이 날리신 비행기를 받았다는 사실에 왠지 특별한 기분이 들었다. 또, 사실 난 내 비행기에 나의 꿈이라기 보단 디지털 외교관을 임하는 포부를 썼기에 좋은 기회라는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 이제 부터 난 나의 꿈을 직접 소개하려 한다. :D

     나의 꿈은 UNICEF직원이다. 나의 롤모델, 한비야 유엔 자문위원님의 "바람의 딸, 걸어서 지구 세바퀴 반"이라는 책을 읽고 나서부터 난 줄곧 UN진출을 꿈꾸어 왔다. UIN에 진출해서도 사무직보다는 현장직으로 직접 빈곤과 가난에 허덕이는 나라에 방문하여 아이들을 돕고 싶었다. 그녀의 말처럼 그 일을 하다가 내 목숨을 잃어도 행복할 정도로, 모두가 그 일은 너무 위험하고 나의 생김새와 어울리지 않는 다는 말을 하여도 난 꼭 그 일을 하고 싶었다. 한창 사랑 받으며 꿈을 키워가야 할 아이들이 빈곤과 어른들의 싸움으로 공부는 커녕 가족을 잃거나 목숨을 잃거나 성범죄의 최대 피해자가 되는 모습이 너무 가슴 아팠기 때문이다. 하지만 한편으로 난 그들은 도와주는 데 절대적인 영향을 끼치는 기부가 그들을 모두 돕기에는 절대적으로 부족하다는 사실에 그들의 힘든 상황을 홍보하여 기부금을 모으는 일을 하고 싶었다. 동아리 활동으로 그들을 홍보하고 기부금을 모으는 활동을 통해 난 내가 그런 일을 잘 할 수 있고 좋아한다는 사실도 알고 있었다. 하지만 난 그 두개의 꿈에서 항상 왔다갔다 하고 있었다. 하지만 어제(7월 23일) 제1기 디지털 외교관 발대식에 참가함으로서 난 나의 꿈을 후자로 확정했다. 잘못된 사실을 고치고 무관심을 관심으로 바꾸어 실천을 이끌어내는 활동은 한국을 홍보하는 일에만 그치는 것이 아니라는 생각이 들었고 그것이 내가 가장 잘할 수 있고 좋아하는 일이기 때문이다. 현장직과 홍보하는 일 모두가 그들을 도울 수 있는 일이라면 난 내가 더 잘할 수 있는 일을 선택해 더 큰 도움을 주고 싶다. 물론 난 아직 많이 부족하다. 특히 캠페인이 아닌 SNS를 통한 홍보는 처음 해보는 것이라 잘할 수 있을 지 모르겠다. 하지만 나의 도움을 기다리고 있는 그 아이들을 위해 난 오늘도 나의 실력을 다져갈 것이다. 

1기 디지털 외교관 발대식 및 교육 참가 후기

     어렸을 때 부터 "너 혹시 혼혈아니?" "넌 생각하는게 한국 사람 같지 않아. 한국 사람처럼 행동해" 라는 말을 들어온 나는 한국 사람처럼 행동하는게 무엇일까 고민해왔다. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 난 한국의 모든 것이 싫어졌고 한국인이고 싶지 않아졌다.  그래서 난 유학을 선택했다. 어렸을 때 부터 UNICEF에 들어가 고통받고 있는 아이들을 도와주는게 꿈이었던 나에게 명분은 분명했다. 단순히 책을 외우는 것이 아닌 다양한 종류의 공부를 하는 것, 한국 대학교에서는 잘 가르치지 않는 국제관계학을 공부하는 것, 그리고 대학을 뉴욕으로 감으로써 유엔 본부에서 인턴할 수 있는 기회가 생길 수 있다는 것. 하지만 내가 유학을 결정한 데에는 더 큰 이유 하나가 있었다. 난 단지 한국을 도피하고 싶었던 것이다. 난 그만큼 한국이 싫었고 몰래 이민까지 생각하고 있었다. 하지만 막상 미국을 가니 난 점점 더 한국인이 되어가고 있었다. 한국 이야기에는 관심도 없던 내가 친구들이 한국에 대한 잘못된 이야기를 하고 있으면 갑자기 흥분을 하였고 한국에서 일본인들을 너무 싫어하면 안된다고 말하던 내가 극단적일 만큼 일본은 신랄하게 비난하고 있었다. 특히 독도 이야기가 나오면 나의 극단성은 그 끝을 달리고 있었다. 또 역사시간에는 동해가 Sea of Japan이라고 표기 되어있는 것을 보고 흥분하여 이건 잘못된 표기이니 East Sea라고 바꾸어야 한다고 소리지르고 있었다. 그리고 나는 어느새 Korean Club을 만들고 외국인 친구들에게 한글을 가르치고 있었다.

     나는 나의 이런 모습들이 신기하였다. 한국을 싫어하는 한국인 1위로 뽑힐 것 같이 한국을 싫어하던 내가 내가 아니면 이 학교에서, 더 크게는 미국이라는 나라에서 누가 한국을 보호하고 제대로 알릴 것인가라는 생각을 하게 된것이다. 그래서 난 제1기 디지털 외교관을 지원했고 어제, 7월 23일, 발대식과 교육에 참가하였다. 솔직히 처음엔 그저 지식을 가져온다는 생각이었다. 여러 외교관들과 반크 회원들은 역시 기대를 저버리지 않고  열린외교 시대에서 우리가 이루어야 할 네가지 (개방, 한반도와 동북아시아의 평화와 안정, 범세계적 문제 해결, 공공외교), 공공외교의 필요성과 그 방향, 국제평화외교, 스토리 텔링 등 많은 지식을 전해주셨다. 하지만 이 날, 날 가장 많이 바꾼 것은 박기태 단장님의 강의였다. 단장님의 강의는 단순한 지식이 아닌 삶이었다. 정부의 모든 일자리에서 떨어지신 단장님도 나처럼 한국이 미우셨을 것이다. 하지만 단장님은 한국을 알리는 일을 시작하셨고 지금은 그 누구보다도 한국을 사랑하시고 한국을 위해 많은 일을 하신다. 단장님은 단장님이 하고 싶어하는 일에만 매달리지 않았다. 오히려 단장님을 필요로 하신 곳을 찾아가 그들을 자극했다. 그래서 나도 이젠 날 필요로 하는 곳에 날 헌신하고 싶다. 물론 난 다수의 한국인과 다르다. 나도 내가 그들과 가치관이 많이 다르다는 것을 알고 있다. 나는 동양적인 가치관보단 서양식의 가치관을 따랐고 미국이라는 나라에서 내가 배울 수 있고 경험할 수 있는 것들을 동경한다. 하지만 내가 그 모든것을 경험한다 하여도 난 한국인이다. 난 언제나 잘못된 한국에 대한 인식에 화 낼 것이고 그 곳에 머무르기를 원하면서도 항상 한국을 그리워할 것이다. 

     5시간의 긴 강연을 들으면서 느낀 것도 배운 것도 참 많은 데 이렇게 밖에 표현할 수 있는 내가 너무 안타깝다. 생각은 다 잘 해놓고 표현하려 하면 잘 하지 못하는 나. 그런 난 어제 내가 느끼고 배웠던 그 모든 것을 기억하지 못 할것이다. 하지만 난 나의 마음을 기억할 것이다. 난 내가 어떤 모습이든, 어디에 있든, 다른 나라의 가치관과 그 속의 기회를 동경하든, 한국인이라는 마음. 내가 아니면 한국의 진실된 모습을 볼 수 없는 세계 사람들에게 한국을 홍보하겠다는 마음. 난 그 마음들을 잊지 않을 것이다. 

     한국을 누구보다 싫어하던 아이가 이제 한국을 사랑하고 홍보하겠다 나서면 그 누구도 진심으로 보지 않을 것이다. 하지만 난 나의 마음을 믿는다. 아이러니하게도 한국을 싫어해 봤었기에 난 내가 그 누구보다 한국을 더 사랑한다는 것을 깨달을 수 있었다. 이성이 아닌 내 본능이, 내 마음이 택한 한국이기 때문이다. 이제 난, 제 1기 디지털 외교관으로서 이 블로그를 통해 세계사람들에게 한국을 제 2의 고향으로 만들어 줄 것이다.
